Celebrating a Combined 100 Years of Publishing a Newspaper for City Employees

As we step into 2024, it's time to look back and honor the remarkable journey of the All City Employees Association (ACEA) and the All City Employees Benefit Service Association (ACEBSA). Together, they've been the voice of the City of Los Angeles' active and retired employees for a combined 100 years. This centennial celebration is not just about marking a milestone; it's about recognizing the pivotal role each one of you has played in this incredible journey.

For nostalgic purposes, let’s take a trip down memory lane at some of the historical moments that have happened over the past decades.

The 1920s

The 1920s marked the beginning of an era of innovation and cultural shifts. It was a time when Frigidaire introduced the first self-contained refrigerator, television was in its experimental stage, and the Chemical Closet (Outhouse) was sold for $5.75. This era also saw the birth of Time magazine in New York City and the establishment of the Warner Brothers film studio on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Sporting achievements were notable too, with the New York Yankees defeating the Red Sox in their first home game at the new Yankee Stadium, thanks to Babe Ruth's iconic 3-run home run. This decade laid the foundations for many modern-day comforts and entertainments.

The 1940s

The 1940s were defined by significant milestones. Booker T. Washington became the first African American featured on a U.S. Postage Stamp. The decade also saw the opening of the first McDonald’s Restaurant in San Bernardino, CA, and the introduction of women's nylon stockings to the market. In a move that would shape the future of aviation, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested a staggering $900 million to finance the production of 50,000 airplanes per year.

The 1960s

The 1960s were a vibrant time of change and cultural evolution. Elvis Presley returned to the U.S. after serving in the military in Germany, and the Vietnam War escalated with the deployment of 3,500 soldiers. The Civil Rights Act of 1960, signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower, marked a significant step forward in the nation's journey towards equality. It was also a time where we saw the rise of soul music legends including Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin, the "Queen of Soul."

The 1980s were an exciting period of sporting triumphs and cultural icons. The Pittsburgh Steelers became the first NFL Franchise to win four Super Bowls, and the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team made history by defeating the Soviet Union. This decade also witnessed the U.S. Census, the dramatic incident involving comedian Richard Pryor, and Magic Johnson's stellar performance in the NBA Championship.
